I’m Steve White, and my goal is to help YOU learn how to remodel your bathroom.
I’ve been working in construction for over 22 years, and I’ve concentrated on remodeling bathrooms for 14 of those years. I’ve put in my 10,000+ hours on construction sites and my own flip properties, and I’ve learned a TON. I want to share my extensive knowledge and experience with you, so I’ve developed many YouTube videos and courses to help you find your flow and learn how to build your own bathroom confidently and easily.
The beginning
I’m originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I currently reside with my wife {and Bathroom Remodeling Teacher camera woman/tech support/creative director, etc., Nikki}, 2 kids, and 2 dogs. After graduating high school in 1997, I attended the Pennsylvania College of Technology, where I refined my math and building skills. Once I graduated from college, I worked in the carpenter’s union at first, and then moved on to working for Deckmasters and a few different investors. It didn’t take me long to realize that I just wanted to work for myself. In 2000, my first (and still existing!) company SRW Contracting, Inc. was born and I began to book my own jobs. I continued to work for a few investors, and started to flip properties in areas around and in the city of Pittsburgh. I was young and full of lots of energy, and I said YES to a lot of projects and properties I should have reconsidered. In 2006, during the height of housing market bubble, I was 27 and way in over my head with investors, creditors, and the IRS. It was a long battle and I tried everything to get myself out of it, but in the end, I had to declare bankruptcy and start all over again. Looking back on this situation, it was a pivotal moment and learning lesson. I had to accept responsibility for the mistakes I had made and slowly rebuild what came crashing down. The experience made me a better businessman, and I do not regret going through what I went through.
After meeting Nikki in 2007, we decided to move in together, and so began the process of house hunting. The house we were looking for, however, needed to be inexpensive since we were on a very tight budget. We found a fixer upper on the Northside of Pittsburgh and completely gutted and renovated the beautiful 3-story historical home. It was during this time that I decided to concentrate solely on bathroom remodeling. It was difficult at first (as it is anytime you start a new business), but I slowly began to build my clientele and got more and more bathroom remodeling jobs.
In 2010, after living in the Northside for a little over two years, Nikki and I decided we wanted to move out of the city. We found another dilapidated property in Sewickley, Pennsylvania with a lot more land and privacy. We redesigned and renovated the entire home, and enjoyed living there, getting married there, and having our two kids there over the course of 9 years.
how i got into youtube
In 2014, I remodeled a bathroom for a client named Jeff Patterson who was interested in learning all about what I did for a living. Jeff was a DIYer and had an existing YouTube channel called Home Repair Tutor. We creatively clicked, and I decided to partner with him when he expressed an interest in doing so. We were great friends and created an entire series of videos and tutorials devoted to bathroom remodeling (plus a few extra remodeling topics) over the course of 6 years, producing the affiliate platform called Bathroom Repair Tutor.
I eventually grew tired of working for clients and in their homes, so I made a slight change with my career and began to focus on flipping properties. I was flipping homes to earn a living full time from 2015 to 2019, which served as a great set up for filming our bathroom tutorials. In 2018, I successfully obtained my Real Estate license to learn the ins-and-outs of buying and selling homes, and to also make more money when I sold my flip properties. This was a particularly hectic period of my life since I was working on flipping properties and Bathroom Repair Tutor full time, along with having and raising 2 little kids with Nikki.
In 2018, Nikki and I decided to move from our home in Sewickley due to the gas & oil development that was taking place on the road we lived on. We found another fixer upper in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Ohio Township. We did a total overhaul of the property, adding a second story along with redoing the entire layout of the home. We sold our beloved home in Sewickley and moved out during the Summer of 2019.
building back… again, but better
It was during this time the momentum was really beginning to pick up for Home Repair Tutor/Bathroom Repair Tutor. It was also during this time things fell apart between me and Jeff. We had always done our business with verbal agreements, and unfortunately, I once again had to learn the lesson the hard way. Jeff and I had what I thought was a great friendship, and I fully trusted him and his word. Verbal promises quickly fly out the window when trust is lost and communication falls on deaf ears. The bottom line is when it comes to business, get everything in writing.
That brings me to my current situation: using my knowledge and experience to help YOU with your own bathroom. Working with Jeff and Home Repair Tutor was a great exchange of information and learning how social media platforms work. I taught Jeff everything there is to know about bathroom remodeling, and allowed him to film me as I worked and use that content for Home Repair Tutor. Jeff taught me how YouTube, Facebook, Amazon, and Instagram can promote my talents and I can get paid for it. We both walked away with valuable knowledge, which in my eyes is priceless.
My hope is that I can impart my wisdom of construction to YOU, and YOU can use it to remodel your own bathroom or start your own bathroom remodeling business. The tradesmen in this country are limited in numbers, and I would love to help it grow. Teaching others to be self-sufficient and confident in what they do is the best I can ask for with my teachings. I hope you follow me on this journey… and buckle up, because it’s going to be a bumpy ride!
