Good evening, students!

It’s tough to stay on budget with a bathroom remodel, especially if your home is more than 30 years old. It’s really tough to tell what the condition of your existing plumbing, electrical & framing is until you remove and demo everything.

Here are 5 suggestions on how to stay within budget:

#1 Set aside 10-15% of your budget for extras. In my experience this is a normal cost overrun for most bathroom remodels. So if you get quotes for $10,000, set aside $1,500 or expect the final price to be $11,500

#2 Be careful with your walk-in showers. Know the overall cost of a tiled walk-in shower. It is a luxury item and costs can get out of control quick. I see all too often clients going over budget with walk-in showers. Tile edging, shower floors, accents, mosaics, shower doors and other features can add on a lot of cost. Know your numbers before signing a contract with a contractor

#3 Consider other flooring options. I personally do not like tiled floors without a heated flooring system. Know that tile installation is typically double that of other floor coverings. It all comes down to time. Most of the time its a 2 day process for tile, where vinyl plank or other options is a couple hour deal. Either way, I always recommend you waterproof the bathroom floor before installing the finished floor

#4 Package deals. It takes time for this kind of shopping, but you will most of the time save a significant amount on vanity package deals. 24-60" vanities are all popular sizes. Most can be under $1,000 compared to getting a custom top ordered for a standard vanity.

#5 Consider painting the bathroom yourself. Painting is typically charged at a premium. Its a whole other day for this process. I think spending money on the permanent fixtures is a better investment.
